The Centre, 2nd Floor

The recent whistleblowing revelations about the US Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act have sparked considerable media and public debate over the past few months and raised fundamental privacy concerns across Europe. Consumer trust in the technology sector – one of the core building blocks of the digital economy – has also been dented. The revelations, which brought to the fore the thorny issue of how to strike a balance between fundamental rights, national security and promoting competition innovation and economic growth, come in the midst of an EU data protection legislation  overhaul. How will recent events resonate in Brussels and impact the legislative debate around privacy?

Will Edward Snowden’s revelations spur a renewed drive to agree on the proposed EU Data Protection Regulation in the coming months? Or will it be yet another obstacle in the already complex and slow-moving discussion, thus adding further complication to reaching an agreement?

Some argue that this may be an opportunity to call for stronger data protection rules while others warn to not blur the issues and give into the diversion that the PRISM scandal creates with respect to the reform’s key issues. Come and join the debate!

Expert panel:

  • MEP Jan Philipp Albrecht, Member of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice & Home Affairs, European Parliament
  • Dr. Christopher Kuner, Wilson Sonsini, Brussels
  • Paul Nemitz, Director of Fundamental rights and citizenship, DG Justice, European Commission
  • Henriette Tielemans, Secretary of the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) and Co-Chair of Covington & Burling Privacy and Data Security Practice Group

The debate will be followed by a networking cocktail.
