Building trust to make the EU’s health ambition a reality
In 2017, the ‘White paper on the future of Europe’, presented by former European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, outlined the possibility of the European Union stopping to act on health policy. Only a few years later, the COVID-19 pandemic placed health at the top of the EU policy agenda.
Health is now among the key topics that will be discussed as part of the Conference on the Future of Europe; additionally, the European Health Union package aims to increase EU level coordination on health policy by strengthening the EU's health security framework and reinforcing the role of key EU agencies such as the EMA and the ECDC. The upcoming proposal on establishing the new Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Authority – HERA – represents another flagship initiative for building the European Health Union.
Cooperation among relevant stakeholders and public-private partnerships are crucial elements to make the ambition of the European Health Union a tangible reality for EU citizens. However, after more than one year since the beginning of the pandemic, trust has been impacted on a wide scale and an epidemic of misinformation has been adding further disruption across Europe.
The health data of the 2021 Edelman Trust Barometer dig into some of these issues and outline the way forward to increase trust in the healthcare sector. Please join us on 17 May at 14:30 (CEST) as Kirsty Graham (Public Affairs CEO and Health Chair, Edelman), reveals which stakeholders are gaining and losing trust in the face of COVID-19, and a panel of high-level speakers from the policy, NGO, media and industry communities discusses how to make the European Union’s ambition in health a reality.
